FISH CURRY
The South African fish curry is a popular dish cooked in a spicy and tangy gravy. The secret to a good fish curry s the perfect balance of tamarind used in the curry. Also depends upon the type of fish used to make curry.
Curry is essentially a dish that includes a sauce or gravy that is typically cooked with meat, cubed cheese, vegetables or fish. The main ingredient of curry is turmeric powder which brings the bright yellowish color in curries. Other spices may vary like red chilli powder ,cumin, clove, cinnamon, coriander etc .
MACKEREL FISH CURRY
Mackerel is an important food fish that is consumed world wide and Mackerel and sardines are very common fishes around the world. .Mackerel is one of the loveliest of fishes, tastiest and one of the cheapest fish. Even more most of the mackerel is best eaten when it is super-fresh. Health-wise it’s very high in Omega-3 and low in mercury
But today we are presenting a quick and easy South African canned fish curry from Johannesburg. The ingredients are so simple that they are available everywhere in the world.
EASY TO COOK SOUTH AFRICAN FISH CURRY – Come on, let’s get started

INGREDIENTS
- ½ cup oil
- 1 onion sliced
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp coriander powder
- 1tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 medium potatoes
- 2 medium tomatoes diced
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup tamarind paste
- 1 can mackerel fish
- 4-5 green chillis
INSTRUCTIONS:
Soak tamarind in water for 10 minutes and squeeze and extract all the juices and set aside.
Heat oil in a large flat pot. Sauté onion until it’s golden brown
Add 1tea spoon turmeric powder and 1 tea spoon ginger and garlic and saute for couple of minutes.
Now add 1tea spoon red chilli powder, 1 tea spoon coriander powder,1 tea spoon salt, 2 chopped potatoes,tomatoes and half cup water. Cover the lid and cook for 15 minutes.
Now add half cup tamarind paste mix it and add canned mackerel fish and green chillis and cover the lidand cook another for 2 minutes.
Switch the stove off. Remove from heat. Do not stir the curry as the fish will break.
Serve hot with rice or roti (flat bread).
Note:
Put the fish in the last and let it cook on simmer for 2 to 3 minutes and do not stir as cannned fish doesnot require long time to cook.
